‘하나님을 노엽게도, 역겹게도 하지 맙시다!’
(열왕기상 15:33-16:14)
1.갈등찾기/하나님을 (노엽게) 하지 맙시다
열왕기상은 남유다와 북이스라엘의 왕들의 이야기입니다.
오늘 본문인 열왕기상 15:33-16:14에 수록되어 있는 이야기는 북이스라엘의 바아사왕과 그의 아들 엘라왕 그리고 남유다의 아사왕에 관한 것입니다.
제가 말씀을 읽고 묵상하는 가운데 제 마음에 찾아온 것은 ‘하나님을 노엽게 하였다;는 구절이었습니다. 이 말씀이 오늘 본문에 무려 3번 등장합니다.
두 번은 바아사왕에게, 한 번은 엘라왕에게 하나님께서 노하시는 것입니다.
(왕상 16:2) … 그들의 죄로 나를 노엽게 하였은즉
(왕상 16:7) … 여호와를 노엽게 하였음이며…
(왕상 16:13) … 하나님 여호와를 노하시게 하였더라
도대체 하나님은 왜 바아사와 엘라에게 노여워하셨을까요?
1)하나님이 보시기에 (악)을 행하는 것입니다.
열왕기상 15:34에 보니 바아사가 하나님 보시기에 ‘악’을 행하였습니다.
(왕상 15:34) 바아사가 여호와 보시기에 악을 행하되…
2)하나님 보시기에 (헛된) 짓을 행하는 것입니다.
열왕기상 16:13을 보니 하나님 보시기에 ‘헛된 것들’을 행하였습니다.
(왕상 16:13) …그들의 헛된 것들로 이스라엘의 하나님 여호와를 노하시게 하였더라
하나님께서는 바아사와 엘라의 ‘악한 행동’과 ‘헛된 짓들’로 인하여 노하시게 되었습니다.
2.갈등분석/ 헛된 짓들이 무엇입니까?
도대체 하나님을 노엽게하고, 역겹게 한 악한 행동과 헛된 짓들은 무엇일까요?
크게 두 가지로 볼 수 있는데, 더 세분하여 보면 다시 3가지로 볼 수 있습니다.
1)(여로보암)의 길로 행하는 것입니다.
2)이스라엘백성들에게 죄 (짓게) 하는 것입니다.
(왕상 15:34) 바아사가 여호와 보시기에 악을 행하되 여로보암의 길로 행하며 그가 이스라엘에게 범하게 한 그 죄 중에 행하였더라
(질문) 도대체 여로보암이 어떤 죄를 저질렀기에 ‘그의 길로 행하여’라고 말하고 있을까요? 도대체 어떤 죄를 저질었기에, 본인만 죄를 짓는 것이 아니라, 이스라엘백성이 모두 죄를 범하게 만들었을까요
1)여로보암은 금송아지를 두 개 만들어서 벧엘과 단에 두고, 이스라엘백성들이 금송아지에게 경배하도록 하였습니다.
(왕상 12:28-30) 이에 계획하고 두 금송아지를 만들고 무리에게 말하기를 너희가 다시는 예루살렘에 올라갈 것이 없도다 이스라엘아 이는 너희를 애굽 땅에서 인도하여 올린 너희의 신들이라 하고 하나는 벧엘에 두고 하나는 단에 둔지라 이 일이 죄가 되었으니 이는 백성들이 단까지 가서 그 하나에게 경배함이더라
2)여로보암이 산당을 짓고, 레위 자손이 아닌 보통 백성으로 제사장으로 삼았습니다.
(왕상 12:31-32) 그가 또 산당들을 짓고 레위 자손 아닌 보통 백성으로 제사장을 삼고 여덟째 달 곧 그 달 열다섯째 날로 절기를 정하여 유다의 절기와 비슷하게 하고 제단에 올라가되 벧엘에서 그와 같이 행하여 그가 만든 송아지에게 제사를 드렸으며 그가 지은 산당의 제사장을 벧엘에서 세웠더라
3)여로보암은 자기 마음대로 정한 달을 절기로 정하여 분향을 드리도록 하였습니다.
(왕상 12:33) 그가 자기 마음대로 정한 달 곧 여덟째 달 열다섯째 날로 이스라엘 자손을 위하여 절기로 정하고 벧엘에 쌓은 제단에 올라가서 분향하였더라
3.실마리/ 하나님을 (기쁘게) 해드립시다.
사람이 창조된 목적이 무엇이었을까 생각해 보았습니다. 분명한 것은 하나님을 역겹게 노엽게 하는 것은 아닙니다. ‘하나님의 영광을 위하여 창조된 자’가 바로 우리들입니다.
(사 43:7) 내 이름으로 불려지는 모든 자 곧 내가 내 영광을 위하여 창조한 자를 오게 하라 그를 내가 지었고 그를 내가 만들었느니라
하나님께서 세상을 창조하시고, 사람을 창조하신 후에 이렇게 말씀하셨습니다. ‘보시기에 심히 좋았더라!’
(창 1:31) 하나님이 지으신 그 모든 것을 보시니 보시기에 심히 좋았더라 저녁이 되고 아침이 되니 이는 여섯째 날이니라
열왕기상에도 하나님을 기쁘시게, 하나님을 영화롭게 했던 왕이 소개되고 있습니다. 북이스라엘 왕조의 6왕이 세워질 때, 동시대에 있었던 남유대의 왕 아사입니다. 아사왕은 하나님의 마음을 기쁘게 해 드린 착한 왕이었습니다.
구체적으로 어떤 일을 하였기에 아사왕은 하나님을 기쁘게 해 드렸습니까? 노엽게도, 역겹게도 하지 않은 왕이 되었습니까?
1)하나님 보시기에 (정직) 하게 행하였습니다.
(왕상 15:11) 아사가 그의 조상 다윗 같이 여호와 보시기에 정직하게 행하여
가)(남색) 하는 자를 땅에서 쫓아내고 모든 (우상)을 없앴습니다.
(왕상 15:12) 남색하는 자를 그 땅에서 쫓아내고 그의 조상들이 지은 모든 우상을 없애고
나)어머니가 아세라상을 만들자 (태후)의 위를 폐하고, 그 우상을 찍어 불살랐습니다.
(왕상 15:13) 또 그의 어머니 마아가가 혐오스러운 아세라 상을 만들었으므로 태후의 위를 폐하고 그 우상을 찍어 기드론 시냇가에서 불살랐으나
다)아사의 마음이 일평생 여호와 앞에 (온전) 하였습니다.
(왕상 15:14) … 아사의 마음이 일평생 여호와 앞에 온전하였으며
라)아버지와 자기가 (성별) 한 것을 성전에 드렸습니다.
(왕상 15:15) 그가 그의 아버지가 성별한 것과 자기가 성별한 것을 여호와의 성전에 받들어 드렸으니 곧 은과 금과 그릇들이더라
2)우리가 어떤 (존재) 인지 잊지 말아야 합니다.
하나님께서는 예후를 통하여 바아사왕의 악을 꾸짖으시면서, 그의 정체성에 대하여 언급하셨습니다.
‘내가 너를 티끌에서 들어 주권자가 되게 하였다!’
바아사의 존재는 곧 ‘티끌’이라는 것입니다. ‘흙’을 말하고, ‘먼지’같은 존재임을 말합니다.
(왕상 16:2) 내가 너를 티끌에서 들어 내 백성 이스라엘 위에 주권자가 되게 하였거늘…
이 고백을 믿음의 조상 아브라함이 소돔과 고모라의 멸망을 앞두고 하나님께 하였습니다. ‘나는 티끌이고 재와 같은 존재입니다!’
(창 18:27) 아브라함이 대답하여 이르되 나는 티끌이나 재와 같사오나 감히 주께 아뢰나이다
바울은 사람의 존재를 두고 고린도전서 1:27-29에서 이렇게 언급합니다.
‘우리는 미련한 존재’ ‘우리는 약한 존재’ ‘우리는 천한 존재’ ‘우리는 멸시 받는 존재’ ‘우리는 없는 존재’이기에 결국 아무 육체도 하나님 앞에서 자랑할 것이 없다는 것입니다.
(고전 1:27) 그러나 하나님께서 세상의 미련한 것들을 택하사 지혜 있는 자들을 부끄럽게 하려 하시고 세상의 약한 것들을 택하사 강한 것들을 부끄럽게 하려 하시며
(고전 1:28) 하나님께서 세상의 천한 것들과 멸시 받는 것들과 없는 것들을 택하사 있는 것들을 폐하려 하시나니
(고전 1:29) 이는 아무 육체도 하나님 앞에서 자랑하지 못하게 하려 하심이라
바아사나 엘라나 참 불쌍합니다. 티끌같은 존재가 하나님 앞에서 헛짓이나 하고 있으니 안타깝습니다. 사람의 존재는 결국 하나님을 영화롭게 하는 피조물인데, 마치 자기가 ‘주권자’인양(왕상 16:2) 까불고, 그래서 하나님을 노엽게, 역겹게 하고 있으니 안타깝습니다.
말씀을 묵상하면서 다시 주님께 회개합니다. 하나님, 저는 티끌입니다. 재입니다. 먼지입니다. 하나님을 노엽게도, 역겹게도 하지 않게 하시고, 하나님을 영화롭게 하옵소서!
4.복음제시/ 하나님은 어떤 분이십니까?
1)하나님은 (선하신) 분이십니다.
(시 34:8) 너희는 여호와의 선하심을 맛보아 알지어다 그에게 피하는 자는 복이 있도다
2)하나님은 (인자하신) 분이십니다.
(시 118:1) 여호와께 감사하라 그는 선하시며 그의 인자하심이 영원함이로다
Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; his love endures forever.
3)하나님은 평생 반드시 (나를) 따르십니다.
맞습니다. 그런데 더 엄청난 하나님의 모습은 이러합니다. 선하시고 인자하신 하나님께서 나의 평생에 반드시 따라다니시면서 나를 인도해주시고, 돌보도아주시고, 지켜주신다는 것입니다.
(시 23:6) 내 평생에 선하심과 인자하심이 반드시 나를 따르리니
Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life,
아사왕이 하나님 보시기에 정직하고, 하나님의 말씀에 순종할 수 있었던 힘이 그에게 있었던 것이 아닙니다. 선하시고, 인자하신 하나님께서 아사왕을 떠나지 않으시고, 항상 그를 따라다니시면서 붙잡아 주시고, 지켜주셨기에 아사왕이 하나님 앞에 정직할 수 있었던 것입니다.
5.결론/ 하나님을 노엽게도, 역겹게도 하지 않으려고 합니다. 그러기 위해서 하나님이 보시기에 악을 행하지 말고, 헛된 짓들을 행하지 않으려고 합니다. 도리어 하나님을 기쁘시게 해 드리는 사람, 목사로 살고 싶습니다. 그러기위해서 아사왕처럼 하나님 보시기에 정직하게 행하는 인생을 살고 싶습니다. 하나님, 제가 늘 티끝같은 존재임을 잊지 않게 하시고, 더나아가 하나님은 선하시고, 인자하시며, 특별히 그 선하심과 인자하심으로 평생 나를 따라다니시면서 사랑해주심을 잊지 않고 살게 해 주옵소서..

5.결론/ 하나님을 노엽게도, 역겹게도 하지 맙시다. 그러기 위해서는 하나님이 보시기에 악을 행하지 말고, 헛된 짓들을 행하지 맙시다. 도리어 하나님을 기쁘시게 해 드립시다. 그러기위해서 하나님 보시기에 정직하게 행하며, 우리가 어떤 존재인지를 항상 기억합시다. 특별히 하나님이 어떤 분이신지를 잊지 맙시다. 하나님은 선하시고, 인자하시며, 특별히 그 선하심과 인자하심으로 평생 따라다니시며 사랑해주십니다.

‘Let us not offend or displease God!’
(1 Kings 15:33-16:14)
1. Finding conflict/Let’s not make God angry
1 Kings is the story of the kings of southern Judah and northern Israel.
The story contained in today's text, 1 Kings 15:33-16:14, is about King Baasha of northern Israel, his son King Elah, and King Asa of southern Judah.
While I was reading and meditating on the Word, what came to my mind was the phrase ‘I made God angry.’ This word appears three times in today’s text.
God is angry twice with King Baasha and once with King Ela.
(1 Kings 16:2) … Because they have offended me with their sins
(1 Kings 16:7) … Because they provoked Jehovah...
(1 Kings 16:13) … He made the LORD God angry.
Why on earth was God angry with Baasha and Elah?
1) It is to do (evil) in the eyes of God.
In 1 Kings 15:34, we see that Baasha did ‘evil’ in the eyes of God.
(1 Kings 15:34) Baasha did evil in the sight of the Lord...
2) It is a (vain) act in the eyes of God.
In 1 Kings 16:13, he did ‘vain things’ in the eyes of God.
(1 Kings 16:13) … And they made the LORD God of Israel angry with their vanity.
God became angry because of Baasha and Elah’s ‘evil actions’ and ‘vain deeds.’
2. Conflict Analysis/What are the useless things?
What on earth are the evil actions and vain things that anger and disgust God?
It can be broadly viewed into two types, but if you look more closely, it can be viewed into three types.
1) It is to walk in the way of (Jeroboam).
2) It is to cause the Israelites to sin.
(1 Kings 15:34) And Baasha did evil in the sight of the LORD; he walked in the ways of Jeroboam, and walked in the sins which he had caused Israel to commit.
(Question) What kind of sin did Jeroboam commit that makes us say ‘walk in his ways’? What kind of sin did he commit that he not only committed the sin himself, but also caused all of the Israelites to commit the sin?
1) Jeroboam made two golden calves and placed them in Bethel and Dan, and had the Israelites worship the golden calves.
(1 Kings 12:28-30) So he planned and made two golden calves and said to the crowds, “You will no longer go up to Jerusalem; for these are your gods, O Israel, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt.” He placed one in Bethel. And he placed one on the altar, and this became a sin, because the people went to the altar and worshiped the one.
2) Jeroboam built a high place and appointed ordinary people, not descendants of Levi, as priests.
(1 Kings 12:31-32) He built high places and appointed priests from the common people, not from the descendants of Levi. He appointed a feast in the eighth month, on the fifteenth day of the month, similar to the feasts of Judah. He went up to the altar and did the same thing in Bethel. He sacrificed the calf he had made and appointed priests in Bethel for the high place he had built.
3) Jeroboam designated a month of his own choosing as a feast and offered his incense.
(1 Kings 12:33) He appointed a feast for the children of Israel on the fifteenth day of the eighth month, in the month he had appointed. He went up to the altar he had built at Bethel and offered incense.
3. Clue/ Let’s please God.
I wondered what the purpose of human creation was. What is clear is that it does not offend God in a disgusting way. We are ‘those created for the glory of God.’
(Isaiah 43:7) Let all who are called by my name, whom I created for my glory, whom I formed, whom I made.
After God created the world and man, he said this: ‘Behold, it was very good!’
(Genesis 1:31) And God saw all that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day.
In 1 Kings, a king who pleased God and glorified Him is introduced. When the six kings of the Northern Israel Dynasty were established, Asa was the king of Southern Judea at the same time. King Asa was a good king who made God's heart happy.
What specifically did King Asa do to please God? Did he become a king who was neither angry nor disgusting?
1) I acted (honestly) in the eyes of God.
(1 Kings 15:11) Asa did what was right in the sight of the Lord, just as his father David did.
A) Those who practiced sodomy were driven out of the land and all (idols) were destroyed.
(1 Kings 15:12) He drove out the sodomites out of the land and destroyed all the idols his ancestors had made.
B) When my mother made the idol of Asherah, she dethroned the Queen Mother and cut down the idol and burned it.
(1 Kings 15:13) And because his mother Maacah had made an abominable image of Asherah, she dethroned the queen mother and cut down the image and burned it at the brook Kidron.
c) Asa’s heart was (perfect) before the Lord all his life.
(1 Kings 15:14) … Asa's heart was perfect before the Lord all his life.
d) He gave to the temple what his father and he had (consecrated).
(1 Kings 15:15) He brought to the temple of the LORD what his father had consecrated and what he had consecrated: silver, gold, and vessels.
2) We must not forget what (existence) we are.
God rebuked King Baasha for his evil through Jehu and mentioned his identity.
‘I have lifted you up from the dust and made you sovereign!’
Baasha’s existence is ‘dust’. It speaks of ‘soil’ and that it is like ‘dust’.
(1 Kings 16:2) I have lifted you up from the dust and made you ruler over my people Israel…
Abraham, the father of faith, made this confession to God ahead of the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah. ‘I am like dust and ashes!’
(Genesis 18:27) Abraham answered, “I am as dust and ashes, but I dare to speak to you.”
Paul comments on human existence in 1 Corinthians 1:27-29:
‘We are foolish beings,’ ‘we are weak beings,’ ‘we are lowly beings,’ ‘we are beings despised,’ and ‘we are beings that do not exist.’ In the end, no body has anything to boast about before God.
(1 Corinthians 1:27) But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise, and God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong.
(1 Corinthians 1:28) God chose the lowly things of the world, the things that are despised, and the things that are not, to bring to nothing the things that are.
(1 Corinthians 1:29) So that no flesh should boast before God.
I feel so sorry for Vaasana Elana. It's a pity that these dust-like beings are acting in vain before God. Human beings are ultimately creatures that glorify God, but it is a pity that they act like they are ‘sovereign’ (1 Kings 16:2) and thus offend and disgust God.
As I meditate on the Word, I repent to the Lord again. God, I am dust. It's ashes. It's dust. Please do not anger or disgust God, but glorify God!
4. Gospel Presentation/ What is God like?
1) God is (good).
(Psalm 34:8) Taste and see that the LORD is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in him.
2) God is (kind).
(Psalm 118:1) Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good, for his love endures forever.
Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; his love endures forever.
3) God will definitely follow (me) throughout my life.
you're right. But the even more incredible appearance of God is like this. It means that God, who is good and kind, will always follow me throughout my life, guiding me, caring for me, and protecting me.
(Psalm 23:6) Surely goodness and mercy will follow me all the days of my life.

King Asa did not have the strength to be honest in God's eyes and obey God's word. King Asa was able to be honest before God because the good and kind God did not leave King Asa, but always followed him, held him, and protected him.
5. Conclusion/ I try not to offend or displease God. In order to do so, we try not to do evil or do useless things in the eyes of God. Rather, I want to live as a pastor and a person who pleases God. To that end, I want to live a life that is honest in the eyes of God like King Asa. God, please help me not to forget that I am always like a speck of a being, and furthermore, that you are good and kind, and especially that you follow me and love me all your life with that goodness and kindness..
