인간의 ‘열심’과 ‘한계’ 그리고 하나님의 ‘존재’
(열왕기하 10:28-36)
1.갈등찾기/ 인간이란 어떤 존재입니까?
인간이란 어떤 존재입니까? 여러가지 정의가 있지만, 2020년 대학교수들이 선정한 사자성어를 통해 설명하면 오늘 성경본문을 좀 쉽게 이해할 수 있을 것 같습니다.
1)2020년 교수가 뽑은 사자성어는 是他非(아시타비)입니다.
我是他非(아시타비)라는 뜻은 “나는 옳고, 다른 이는 ( 틀리다 )”라는 말입니다.
쉽게 설명하면 ‘내로남불’ 같은 말입니다.
사실 하나님께서 인간을 만드실 때는 이런 존재가 되기를 원하셨습니다. 寬人嚴己(관인엄기)
뜻이 무엇입니까? “남에게 관대하고, 자신에게 ( 엄격 )하다”라는 뜻입니다.
안타깝게도 자신에게는 관대한 반면에, 남에게는 엄격한 자대를 들이대로 판단하고, 비판하고, 저주하는 시대를 우리는 살고 있습니다.
2)‘돌풍’이라는 드라마를 보셨습니까?
최근에 독립기념일 하루 동안, 친구의 추천으로 ‘돌풍’이라는 드라마를 보았습니다. 내용은 심플합니다. 386세대의 민주화운동을 했던 진보인사들이 정치권에 들어가서 어떻게 제도권에서 타락해 나가는가에 대한 이야기입니다.
드라마를 보면서 감동도 있었지만, 사회정의를 위해 싸우던 이들이, 자기의 이권을 위해서는 타협하고 타락해 가는 我是他非(아시타비)한 모습들을 보면서 참 마음이 아팠습니다.
드라마의 주인공인 설경구가 타락해 가는 김희애에게 했던 말이 아직도 뇌리에서 떠나지 않습니다.
“거짓을 이기는 건 진실이 아니야, 더 큰 ( 거짓 )이지!”
드라마의 마지막은 해피엔딩으로 권선징악으로 끝나지만, 개인 설경구가 악과 타협할 때마다 내로남불하는 모습은 아직도 불편합니다.
그리고 그런 모습들이 내게, 우리 목회자들에게, 크리스챤들에게 나타나고 있는 것들을 생각할 때 괴로웠습니다.
3)예후는 바알에 엄격했고, ( 금송아지 )에는 관대했습니다.
예후는 어떤 인물입니까?
남유다에 요시아나 히스기야와 같은 종교개혁의 인물들이 있다면, 북이스라엘에는 그들과 비교할 때 손색이 없어보이는 예후가 있습니다.
하나님께서 그를 평가할 때 칭찬하셨던 평가는 남유다의 어떤 왕들도 듣지 못한 것이었습니다.
“정직한 일을 행하였다!”
“잘 행하여 내 마음에 있는 대로 행하였다!”
(왕하 10:30) 여호와께서 예후에게 이르시되 네가 나보기에 정직한 일을 행하되 잘 행하여 내 마음에 있는 대로 아합 집에 다 행하였은즉 네 자손이 이스라엘 왕위를 이어 사대를 지내리라 하시니라
그런데 예후에게 아쉬운 부분이 있었습니다. 그것은 바알을 멸할 때는 엄격하였는데, 금송아지를 섬기는 죄를 멸할 때는 관대했었습니다.
(왕하 10:28-29) 예후가 이와 같이 이스라엘 중에서 바알을 멸하였으나 이스라엘에게 범죄하게 한 느밧의 아들 여로보암의 죄 곧 벧엘과 단에 있는 금송아지를 섬기는 죄에서는 떠나지 아니하였더라
너무 궁금했습니다.
왜 바알은 엄격하게 개혁하는데, 금송아지에 대해서는 관대하게 개혁의 고삐를 느슨하게 하였는지!
먼저 바알에 대하여 엄격했던 예후를 살펴보고, 그다음에 금송아지에 관대했던 예후를 찾아보고자 합니다.
2.갈등분석/ 개혁을 향한 예후의 ( 열심 )이 대단했습니다.
1)예후는 바알을 진멸하는데 ( 열심 )을 내었습니다.
예후가 사마리아에 가서 바알을 섬기는 모든 자들을 진멸하러 가면서 레갑의 아들에게 했던 말이 인상적입니다.
“여호와를 위한 나의 열심을 보라!”
(왕하 10:16) 이르되 나와 함께 가서 여호와를 위한 나의 열심을 보라 하고 이에 자기 병거에 태우고
지난 한주간 새벽기도회를 통하여 드렸던 말씀을 회고해 보십시오. 얼마나 예후가 자기의 목숨을 돌보지 않고 아합과 이세벨이 북이스라엘을 영적으로 더럽힌 바알과의 싸움을 치열하게 했는지 알수 있습니다.
예후의 모습에서 갈멜산에서 850명의 바알과 아세라를 섬기는 자들과의 전투가 연상됩니다.
2)열왕기하 9/10장에는 예후의 ‘열심’이 기록되어 있습니다.
가)북이스라엘의 ( 여호람 )을 죽였습니다. (왕하 9:24)
나)남유다의 왕 ( 아하시야 )를 죽였습니다. (왕하 9:27)
다)( 이세벨 )을 죽였습니다. (왕하 9:33)
라)아합의 ( 아들들 )을 죽였습니다. (왕하 10:7)
마)아하시야의 ( 형제들 )을 죽였습니다. (왕하 10:14)
바)아합의 ( 나머지) 사람들을 죽였습니다. (왕하 10:17)
사)바알을 ( 섬기는 ) 자들을 죽였습니다. (왕하 10:25)
아)바알의 신당을 ( 변소 )로 만들었습니다. (왕하 10:27)
하나님을 향한 열심이 없이는 도저히 이런 많은 개혁을 행하지 못했을 것입니다!
왜 이렇게 예후가 열심으로 바알과 바알의 잔당들을 진멸했습니까?
하나님의 예언을 이루기 위함이었습니다.
3)예후의 열심은 하나님의 ( 예언 )을 이루었습니다.
하나님은 엘리야에게 3가지 예언을 하셨습니다.
“하사엘에게 기름을 부어 아람의 왕이 되게 하고”
“예후에게 기름을 부어 이스라엘의 왕이 되게 하고”
“엘리사에게 기름을 부어 선지자가 되게 하라!”
(왕상 19:15) 여호와께서 그에게 이르시되 너는 네 길을 돌이켜 광야를 통하여 다메섹에 가서 이르거든 하사엘에게 기름을 부어 아람의 왕이 되게 하고
(왕상 19:16) 너는 또 님시의 아들 예후에게 기름을 부어 이스라엘의 왕이 되게 하고 또 아벨므홀라 사밧의 아들 엘리사에게 기름을 부어 너를 대신하여 선지자가 되게 하라
그리고 하사엘, 예후, 엘리사가 바알과 바알의 잔당을 진멸할 것이라고 예언하셨고, 예후가 그 하나님의 예언을 이루어 드리기 위해 ‘열심’을 다하였습니다.
(왕상 19:17) 하사엘의 칼을 피하는 자를 예후가 죽일 것이요 예후의 칼을 피하는 자를 엘리사가 죽이리라
예후의 열심이 하나님의 마음에 합하였습니까?
모든 개혁을 성공적으로 이루었습니까?
그렇지 않았습니다.
3.실마리/ 개혁을 행한 예후의 ( 한계 )가 분명했습니다.
1)바알은 진멸했지만 ( 금송아지 )는 진멸하지 못했습니다.
하나님께서는 예후를 많이 칭찬하셨습니다. 그의 개혁의 성과를 두고 칭찬하시면서 예후의 4대를 왕위에서 보존하시겠다고 말씀하시고, 86년 동안 북이스라엘의 왕조를 이루도록 지켜주셨습니다.
(왕하 10:30) 여호와께서 예후에게 이르시되 네가 나보기에 정직한 일을 행하되 잘 행하여 내 마음에 있는 대로 아합 집에 다 행하였은즉 네 자손이 이스라엘 왕위를 이어 사대를 지내리라 하시니라
그러나 예후의 한계가 있었습니다. 그는 바알은 멸하였지만, 금송아지는 멸하지 못했습니다.
(왕하 10:28-29) 예후가 이와 같이 이스라엘 중에서 바알을 멸하였으나 이스라엘에게 범죄하게 한 느밧의 아들 여로보암의 죄 곧 벧엘과 단에 있는 금송아지를 섬기는 죄에서는 떠나지 아니하였더라
좀 쉽게 말하면, 이세벨이 가지고 들어온 바알은 진멸했지만, 북이스라엘의 초대왕이었던 여로보암이 벧엘과 단에 세운 금송아지 제단은 허물지 못했습니다.
왜 바알은 무너뜨렸는데, 금송아지는 멸하지 못했을까요?
2)금송아지를 ( 하나님 )으로 여겼습니다.
바알은 명확하게 페니키아 문명에서 가져온 이방신이었습니다. 그래서 열심으로 무너뜨릴 수 있었습니다. 그런데 금송아지는 달랐습니다. 여로보암이 금송아지를 만들 때가 르호보암과 여로보암이 남유다와 북이스라엘고 나뉘어질 때인데, 성전이 위치한 예루살렘을 가진 남유다에 반해 성전이 없었던 북이스라엘에서 벧엘과 단에 자체 성전을 만들고, 언약궤 대신에 금송아지를 두고 예배하게 한 것입니다.
“이 금송아지가 너희를 애굽 땅에서 인도하여 올린 너희의 하나님이시다!”
(왕상 12:28) 이에 계획하고 두 금송아지를 만들고 무리에게 말하기를 너희가 다시는 예루살렘에 올라갈 것이 없도다 이스라엘아 이는 너희를 애굽 땅에서 인도하여 올린 너희의 신들이라 하고
금송아지를 섬겼던 역사는 아론으로 거슬러 올라갑니다.
모세가 언약궤를 받으러 시내산에 올라갔을 때, 백성들의 압박을 받은 아론이 금고리를 모아 송아지 형상을 만들어 ‘너희를 애굽 땅에서 인도하여 낸 너희의 신이라’ 선언할 때부터입니다.
(출 32:4) 아론이 그들의 손에서 금 고리를 받아 부어서 조각칼로 새겨 송아지 형상을 만드니 그들이 말하되 이스라엘아 이는 너희를 애굽 땅에서 인도하여 낸 너희의 신이로다 하는지라
바알은 ‘이방신’이어서 멸하는데 고민이 없었지만, 금송아지는 ‘애굽에서 인도하여 낸 하나님’이라고 하는 ‘이단종교’가 이스라엘백성 뿌리에, 그리고 예후의 신앙심에 자리잡고 있었던 것입니다.
3)오늘날의 교회들이 ( 금송아지 )를 예배합니다.
예후의 한계가 곧 우리의 한계이기도 합니다.
오늘날 기독교의 문제점이 무엇입니까?
이방종교에 대한 혼합종교도 문제이지만, 더 큰 문제는 이미 교회안에 들어와 있는 ‘물질만능주의’입니다. 맘몬과 같은 ‘돈신’ 때문에 교회가 점점 더 피폐해지고, 멸망하고 있습니다.
이런 주장에 무리가 있다고 생각하십니까?
아닙니다.
사탄은 교묘하게 ‘금송아지’를 입고 교회내에, 목사안에, 성도들안에 침투하여 하나님이 아닌 ‘돈을 물질을 예배하게 합니다.
금송아지가 이스라엘백성에 들어왔을 때 어떤 현상이 일어났습니까?
오늘날 교회에도 똑같은 현상이 일어나고 있습니다.
가)금송아지가 세워지면 ( 언약 )이 깨집니다.
모세가 시내산에서 내려올 때 아론과 무리들이 금송아지에 예배하고 있는 모습이 충격이었습니다. 모세는 이 충격을 이기지 못하여 하나님으로부터 받은 언약궤를 던져 깨뜨렸습니다.
금송아지를 예배하기 시작하면, 하나님의 말씀이 깨집니다!
(출 32:19) 진에 가까이 이르러 그 송아지와 그 춤 추는 것들을 보고 크게 노하여 손에서 그 판들을 산 아래로 던져 깨뜨리니라
예후를 책망하시면서 하셨던 하나님의 말씀도 동일합니다.
“예후가 전심으로 여호와의 율법을 지켜 행하지 아니하도다!”
(왕하 10:31) 그러나 예후가 전심으로 이스라엘 하나님 여호와의 율법을 지켜 행하지 아니하며 여로보암이 이스라엘에게 범하게 한 그 죄에서 떠나지 아니하였더라
교회안에 말씀이 살아있지 못하면 금송아지가 판을 칩니다.
금송아지가 교회에 판을 치면 더 이상 ‘하나님의 말씀’ 듣기가 시들해 집니다!
오늘날의 교회들이 그렇게 타락해가고 있습니다.
나)금송아지가 세워지면 ( 돈 )을 예배합니다.
송아지를 그냥 섬기며 예배하는 것이 아닙니다. 아론 때부터 금들을 모아 송아지를 만들었습니다. 가장 화려하고 값이 나가는 물질에 마음을 빼앗겼습니다. 하나님을 가장한 금을 에배하는 것입니다.
오늘날 죠엘 어스틴을 비롯한 ‘긍정주의자’들이 성도들을 말씀으로부터 때앗아 돈에 도취되게 하고 있습니다.
성경은 분명히 말합니다. ‘너희가 하나님과 재물을 겸하여 섬길 수 없다!’
(눅 16:13) 집 하인이 두 주인을 섬길 수 없나니 혹 이를 미워하고 저를 사랑하거나 혹 이를 중히 여기고 저를 경히 여길 것임이니라 너희는 하나님과 재물을 겸하여 섬길 수 없느니라
예후처럼 바알에는 열심이지만, 금송아지에는 한계를 가지고 있는 오늘날의 교회와 목사, 그리고 성도들은 어떻게 이 한계를 극복할 수 있을까요?
4.복음제시/ 인간의 개혁의 한계를 극복할 수 있습니다.
1)( 하나님 )의 열심이 인간의 한계를 극복하게 합니다.
우리 인간의 힘으로는 금송아지를 헐고 오직 하나님만 섬기는데 역부족입니다. 솔직한 고백입니다.
이 한계를 극복할 수 있는 것은 ‘하나님의 열심’입니다.
히스기야시대에 종교개혁을 하고자 했을 때 예수 그리스도의 예언을 합니다. 인간의 죄를 해결하시고, 교회를 회복시킬 분은 오직 예수 그리스도이신데, 그 예수 그리스도가 이 땅에 오심을 ‘하나님의 열심’이 이루셨다고 선언하십니다.
(사 9:7) 그 정사와 평강의 더함이 무궁하며 또 다윗의 왕좌와 그의 나라에 군림하여 그 나라를 굳게 세우고 지금 이후로 영원히 정의와 공의로 그것을 보존하실 것이라 만군의 여호와의 열심이 이를 이루시리라
우리는 몇 주 동안 게속해서 반복해서 묵상하는 말씀이 있습니다. 바로 빌립보서 2장 13절입니다.
“너희 안에 행하시는 이는 하나님이시다! 너 인간이 아니다!”
“하나님은 자기의 기쁘신 뜻을 위하여 너의 안에 소원을 두신다!”
“그 소원은 하나님을 기쁘시게 하는 것이기에, 하나님이 행하신다!”
(빌 2:13) 너희 안에서 행하시는 이는 하나님이시니 자기의 기쁘신 뜻을 위하여 너희에게 소원을 두고 행하게 하시니라
우리 안에 바알을 무너뜨리기 원하십니까? 하나님이 소원을 주신 것입니다.
오늘 설교를 들으면서 내안의 ‘금송아지’를 부숴버리고 싶습니까? 하나님이 소원을 주신 것입니다.
그렇다면 이제 안심하십시오. 하나님께서 자기의 기쁨을 위하여, 금송아지를 헐어 버리실 것입니다.
2)하나님의 ( 말씀을 )을 따라 열심을 내야합니다.
금송아지를 예배할 때 제일 먼저 나타나는 현상이 무엇이었는지 기억나십니까?
“하나님의 언약이 깨디는 것” 입니다.
달리말하면, 금송아지를 무너뜨릴 힘이 ‘말씀’에 있다는 말입니다.
하나님의 말씀을 가까이하는 사람은 금송아지를 예배하지 않습니다!
아니 금송아지를 예배할 수 없습니다!
말씀이 누구입니까?
에수 그리스도이십니다.
예수 그리스도가 우리 안에 들어오시면, 교회안에 들어오시면, 금송아지는 쫓겨납니다!
(요 1:1) 태초에 말씀이 계시니라 이 말씀이 하나님과 함께 계셨으니 이 말씀은 곧 하나님이시니라
진리이신 예수를 알게 되면, 그 진리이신 예수께서 우리를 금송아지로부터 자유롭게 하십니다!
(요 8:32) 진리를 알지니 진리가 너희를 자유롭게 하리라
5.결론/ 바알에는 엄격하고, 금송아지에는 관대하지 마십시오!
인간의 열심이 모든 개혁을 이루어낼 수 없습니다. 한계가 있습니다.
하나님의 열심을 의지하십시오!
그리고 하나님의 말씀 곧 예수님을 의지하십시오!
이방신인 바알을 물리쳐야겠지만, 더 끊어내기 어려운 교회내 금송아지, 가정안의 금송아지, 내안의 금송아지를 끊어버리십시오!
특별히 성도들끼리 이런 자세를 가져야 합니다.
서론에서 말씀드린대로 我是他非(아시타비) 곧 나에게는 불의에 대하여, 금송아지에 대하여 관대하고, 남에게는 엄격한 잣대로 비판하며 살지 말고, 寬人嚴己(관인엄기) 곧 남에게는 관대하고, 나 자신에게는 더욱 엄격한 잣대로 금송아지를 헐어버리고 신앙생활을 해 나가십시오.
바알을 끊어버리십시오. 사회의 불의를 끊어버리십시오. 그리고 동시에 금송아지를 끊어버리십시오. 나의 욕망을 끊어버리십시오!
갈라디아서 2장의 말씀처럼 내 안에 나를 죽이고, 오직 내 안에 계신 예수 그리스도를 의지하여 살아가십시오. 그렇게 될 때 하나님의 열심이, 하나님의 말씀이 내안의 모든 금송아지를 쫓아내고, 오직 하나님만 예배하며 살게 해 주실 것입니다!
(갈 2:20) 내가 그리스도와 함께 십자가에 못 박혔나니 그런즉 이제는 내가 사는 것이 아니요 오직 내 안에 그리스도께서 사시는 것이라 이제 내가 육체 가운데 사는 것은 나를 사랑하사 나를 위하여 자기 자신을 버리신 하나님의 아들을 믿는 믿음 안에서 사는 것이라
The Effort and Limitations of Humans and the Existence of God
(2 Kings 10:28-36)
1.Finding the Conflict/ What Kind of Being is a Human?
What kind of being is a human? There are many definitions, but understanding it through the Chinese proverb selected by university professors in 2020 might help us grasp today's scripture more easily.
1)The Chinese proverb chosen by professors in 2020 is "是他非" (asi tabi).
"是他非" (asi tabi) means "I am right, others are wrong." In simple terms, it's similar to saying "double standards."
When God created humans, He wanted them to be such beings. "寬人嚴己" (guan ren yan ji) means "to be lenient with others and strict with oneself."
Unfortunately, we live in a time where people are lenient with themselves while being strict, judgmental, and critical towards others.
2)Have you watched the drama 'Whirlwind'?
Recently, on Independence Day, I watched a drama called 'Whirlwind' upon a friend's recommendation. The plot is simple. It tells the story of progressive figures who fought for democratization in the 386 generation, entering politics and becoming corrupt within the system.
While watching the drama, I was moved, but it pained me to see those who fought for social justice compromise and fall into corruption for their own interests, displaying the attitude of "I am right, others are wrong."
The words of the protagonist, Seol Kyung-gu, to Kim Hee-ae, who was falling into corruption, still linger in my mind.
"Truth is not what defeats lies; it's a bigger (lie)!"
Though the drama ends on a happy note with good triumphing over evil, the scenes where Seol Kyung-gu compromises with evil while displaying double standards remain uncomfortable.
Thinking about how such attitudes appear in me, in pastors, and in Christians is distressing.
3)Jehu was strict with Baal but lenient with the golden calves.
Who is Jehu?
If there were religious reformers like Josiah or Hezekiah in Judah, Jehu in Northern Israel would be comparable to them.
When God evaluated him, He praised him in ways no king of Judah had heard.
“You did what was right in my eyes!”
“You carried out what was in my heart!”
(2 Kings 10:30) The Lord said to Jehu, "Because you have done well in accomplishing what is right in my eyes and have done to the house of Ahab all I had in mind to do, your descendants will sit on the throne of Israel to the fourth generation."
However, there was a shortcoming with Jehu. While he was strict in destroying Baal, he was lenient in dealing with the sin of worshiping the golden calves.
(2 Kings 10:28-29) So Jehu destroyed Baal worship in Israel. However, he did not turn away from the sins of Jeroboam son of Nebat, which he had caused Israel to commit—the worship of the golden calves at Bethel and Dan.
I was very curious.
Why was Jehu strict with Baal but lenient with the golden calves?
First, let's look at how Jehu was strict with Baal, then how he was lenient with the golden calves.
2.Conflict Analysis/ Jehu’s Zeal for Reform Was Great
1)Jehu was zealous in eradicating Baal.
When Jehu went to Samaria to eradicate all who worshiped Baal, what he said to the son of Rechab was impressive.
“Come with me and see my zeal for the Lord!”
(2 Kings 10:16) Jehu said, "Come with me and see my zeal for the Lord." Then he had him ride in his chariot.
Reflect on the words shared during the early morning prayer meetings this past week. It is evident how Jehu fought fiercely against Baal and Jezebel, who spiritually corrupted Northern Israel. Jehu's image brings to mind the battle on Mount Carmel against 850 prophets of Baal and Asherah.
2)2 Kings chapters 9 and 10 document Jehu’s zeal.
a) He killed Joram of Northern Israel. (2 Kings 9:24)
b) He killed Ahaziah of Judah. (2 Kings 9:27)
c) He killed Jezebel. (2 Kings 9:33)
d) He killed Ahab’s descendants. (2 Kings 10:7)
e) He killed Ahaziah’s relatives. (2 Kings 10:14)
f) He killed the rest of Ahab’s family. (2 Kings 10:17)
g) He killed all who worshiped Baal. (2 Kings 10:25)
h) He turned Baal’s temple into a latrine. (2 Kings 10:27)
Without zeal for God, he couldn’t have achieved such extensive reforms!
Why was Jehu so zealous in eradicating Baal and his followers?
It was to fulfill God’s prophecy.
3)Jehu’s zeal fulfilled God’s prophecy.
God had made three prophecies to Elijah.
“Anoint Hazael king over Aram.”
“Anoint Jehu son of Nimshi king over Israel.”
“Anoint Elisha son of Shaphat to succeed you as prophet.”
(1 Kings 19:15) The Lord said to him, "Go back the way you came, and go to the Desert of Damascus. When you get there, anoint Hazael king over Aram.
(1 Kings 19:16) Also, anoint Jehu son of Nimshi king over Israel, and anoint Elisha son of Shaphat from Abel Meholah to succeed you as prophet.
And Hazael, Jehu, and Elisha would destroy Baal and his followers, as God had prophesied, and Jehu zealously fulfilled this prophecy.
(1 Kings 19:17) Jehu will put to death any who escape the sword of Hazael, and Elisha will put to death any who escape the sword of Jehu.
Did Jehu’s zeal align with God’s heart?
Did he successfully carry out all the reforms?
No, he did not.
3.Clue/ Jehu’s Reforms Had Limits
1)He eradicated Baal but not the golden calves.
God praised Jehu for his reforms, promising that his descendants would sit on Israel's throne for four generations, ensuring an 86-year dynasty in Northern Israel.
(2 Kings 10:30) The Lord said to Jehu, "Because you have done well in accomplishing what is right in my eyes and have done to the house of Ahab all I had in mind to do, your descendants will sit on the throne of Israel to the fourth generation."
However, Jehu had a limit. He eradicated Baal but not the golden calves.
(2 Kings 10:28-29) So Jehu destroyed Baal worship in Israel. However, he did not turn away from the sins of Jeroboam son of Nebat, which he had caused Israel to commit—the worship of the golden calves at Bethel and Dan.
To put it simply, he eradicated Baal, brought in by Jezebel, but failed to destroy the golden calf altars set up by Jeroboam, the first king of Northern Israel, at Bethel and Dan.
Why did he destroy Baal but fail to eradicate the golden calves?
2)He considered the golden calves as God.
Baal was clearly a foreign deity from Phoenician civilization, making it easy to eradicate. However, the golden calves were different. When Jeroboam made the golden calves, it was at the time when Rehoboam and Jeroboam split into Judah and Northern Israel. With the temple located in Jerusalem (Judah), Northern Israel, lacking a temple, set up their own temples at Bethel and Dan, placing golden calves instead of the Ark of the Covenant and worshipping them.
“This is your god, Israel, who brought you up out of Egypt.”
(1 Kings 12:28) After seeking advice, the king made two golden calves. He said to the people, "It is too much for you to go up to Jerusalem. Here are your gods, Israel, who brought you up out of Egypt."
The history of worshiping the golden calf goes back to Aaron. When Moses went up Mount Sinai to receive the covenant, Aaron, under the pressure of the people, collected gold rings and fashioned a calf, declaring, "This is your god, Israel, who brought you up out of Egypt."
(Exodus 32:4) He took what they handed him and made it into an idol cast in the shape of a calf, fashioning it with a tool. Then they said, "These are your gods, Israel, who brought you up out of Egypt."
Baal was a foreign god, so there was no hesitation in eradicating it, but the golden calves were seen as the "god who brought us out of Egypt," a heretical belief deeply rooted in the faith of the Israelites, including Jehu.
3)Today’s churches worship golden calves.
Jehu’s limitations are also our limitations.
What are the problems in today’s Christianity?
While syncretism with foreign religions is an issue, the bigger problem is the "materialism" already within the church. The church is increasingly deteriorating and perishing because of the idolization of wealth, similar to Mammon.
Do you think this claim is far-fetched?
It is not.
Satan has subtly infiltrated the church, pastors, and believers, making them worship wealth and material possessions instead of God.
What happened when the golden calves entered Israel?
The same thing is happening in today’s churches.
a)Golden Calf: A Breach of Covenant
When a golden calf is established, the covenant is broken.
When Moses descended from Mount Sinai, he was shocked to see Aaron and the people worshiping the golden calf. Overcome by this shock, Moses threw and shattered the tablets of the covenant he received from God.
When worshiping the golden calf begins, God’s word is broken!
(Exodus 32:19) “When Moses approached the camp and saw the calf and the dancing, his anger burned, and he threw the tablets out of his hands, breaking them to pieces at the foot of the mountain.”
The rebuke God gave to Jehu was the same.
"Jehu did not walk in the law of the Lord, the God of Israel, with all his heart."
(2 Kings 10:31) “But Jehu was not careful to keep the law of the Lord, the God of Israel, with all his heart. He did not turn away from the sins of Jeroboam, which he had caused Israel to commit.”
When the word of God is not alive in the church, the golden calf takes over.
When the golden calf dominates the church, hearing the 'word of God' becomes neglected!
Today’s churches are degenerating in this way.
b) Golden Calf: Worshiping Money
Worshiping the golden calf isn’t just about worship. Since Aaron’s time, gold was gathered to make the calf. They were captivated by the most luxurious and expensive materials, worshiping gold disguised as God.
Today, positive-thinking leaders like Joel Osteen are leading believers away from the word and towards the intoxication of wealth.
The Bible clearly states, "You cannot serve both God and money!"
(Luke 16:13) “No servant can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.”
How can today’s churches, pastors, and believers, who are zealous like Jehu but limited with the golden calf, overcome these limitations?
4.Overcoming Human Reform Limitations
1)The zeal of (God) overcomes human limitations.
By our strength alone, it’s impossible to demolish the golden calf and serve only God. This is a candid confession. What can overcome this limitation is ‘God’s zeal.’
In the time of Hezekiah, during the religious reform, it was prophesied about Jesus Christ. The one who will solve human sin and restore the church is only Jesus Christ, and it is declared that ‘God’s zeal’ achieved His coming to this earth.
(Isaiah 9:7) “Of the greatness of his government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David’s throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever. The zeal of the Lord Almighty will accomplish this.”
We have been meditating on a repeated scripture for weeks. It’s Philippians 2:13.
“For it is God who works in you, to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose.”
(Philippians 2:13) “For it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose.”
Do you want to demolish Baal within us? God has given that desire.
While listening to today’s sermon, do you want to smash the ‘golden calf’ within you? God has given that desire.
So now, be assured. For His delight, God will demolish the golden calf.
2)Be zealous for (God’s word).
Do you remember the first manifestation when worshiping the golden calf?
“It is the breaking of God’s covenant.”
In other words, the power to demolish the golden calf is in the ‘word.’
Those who are close to God’s word do not worship the golden calf!
They cannot worship the golden calf!
Who is the word?
It is Jesus Christ.
When Jesus Christ enters us, enters the church, the golden calf is driven out!
(John 1:1) “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”
When we know Jesus, the truth, this truth will set us free from the golden calf!
(John 8:32) “Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
5. Conclusion: Be Strict with Baal, Not Lenient with the Golden Calf
Human zeal cannot accomplish all reforms. There are limitations.
Rely on God’s zeal!
And rely on God’s word, that is, Jesus!
We must defeat the foreign god Baal, but more difficult to cut off is the golden calf within the church, within families, within ourselves!
Especially among believers, maintain this attitude.
As mentioned in the introduction, “我是他非 (I am right, others are wrong)”—living with leniency towards one’s injustice, the golden calf, and strict judgment towards others must be avoided. Instead, “寬人嚴己 (Lenient to others, strict with oneself)”—be lenient towards others, and strictly tear down the golden calf within yourself, living a life of faith.
Destroy Baal. Eliminate social injustice. Simultaneously, destroy the golden calf. Cut off your desires!
As stated in Galatians 2, kill oneself within, and live relying only on Jesus Christ within.
When this happens, God’s zeal, God’s word, will drive out all golden calves within us, enabling us to worship only God!
(Galatians 2:20) “I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.”
