Nehemiah 13:10-22
10 I also learned that the portions assigned to the Levites had not been given to them, and that all the Levites and musicians responsible for the service had gone back to their own fields.
11 So I rebuked the officials and asked them, “Why is the house of God neglected?” Then I called them together and stationed them at their posts.
12 All Judah brought the tithes of grain, new wine and olive oil into the storerooms.
13 I put Shelemiah the priest, Zadok the scribe, and a Levite named Pedaiah in charge of the storerooms and made Hanan son of Zakkur, the son of Mattaniah, their assistant, because they were considered trustworthy. They were made responsible for distributing the supplies to their fellow Levites.
14 Remember me for this, my God, and do not blot out what I have so faithfully done for the house of my God and its services.
While Nehemiah had returned to the king of Persia after completing the rebuilding of the wall, the Israelites were not living out their faith properly. The people neglected giving their tithes, and all the Levites, worship leaders, and other temple servants had left the temple to sustain themselves. Nehemiah rebuked the leaders, asking, "Why is the house of God neglected?" In response, the people of Judah brought their tithes of grain, wine, and oil. As the people gave their tithes, those needed for service in the temple were appointed once again.
We understand the importance of the church and make good use of it not only for the purpose of worship but also for our spiritual lives. We attend church to fellowship within the faith community, learn the Word, and grow in our faith. However, could it be that we are only enjoying it for our own purposes? When I see our students arriving an hour early to clean and maintain the church, I can sense their appreciation for it. We, who have received Jesus Christ, are also the body of Christ and the church. We must keep our bodies clean and cherish them. We should not defile the temple with harmful substances like alcohol, tobacco, and drugs.
15 In those days I saw people in Judah treading winepresses on the Sabbath and bringing in grain and loading it on donkeys, together with wine, grapes, figs and all other kinds of loads. And they were bringing all this into Jerusalem on the Sabbath. Therefore I warned them against selling food on that day.
16 People from Tyre who lived in Jerusalem were bringing in fish and all kinds of merchandise and selling them in Jerusalem on the Sabbath to the people of Judah.
17 I rebuked the nobles of Judah and said to them, “What is this wicked thing you are doing—desecrating the Sabbath day?
18 Didn’t your ancestors do the same things, so that our God brought all this calamity on us and on this city? Now you are stirring up more wrath against Israel by desecrating the Sabbath.”
19 When evening shadows fell on the gates of Jerusalem before the Sabbath, I ordered the doors to be shut and not opened until the Sabbath was over. I stationed some of my own men at the gates so that no load could be brought in on the Sabbath day.
20 Once or twice the merchants and sellers of all kinds of goods spent the night outside Jerusalem.
21 But I warned them and said, “Why do you spend the night by the wall? If you do this again, I will arrest you.” From that time on they no longer came on the Sabbath.
22 Then I commanded the Levites to purify themselves and go and guard the gates in order to keep the Sabbath day holy.
Remember me for this also, my God, and show mercy to me according to your great love.
At that time, in Jerusalem, people gathered at the temple to worship on the Sabbath, making it a favorable day for merchants to conduct business, and many Jews sold various foods and goods. Nehemiah prohibited such actions, which went against the commandment to keep the Sabbath holy. Today, many people also gather at churches on Sundays. There are many temptations to take advantage of those who come to church for personal gain. However, we must become spiritually sensitive. What does God like, and what does He dislike?
Several hundred years later, Jesus sees people selling goods in the temple in Jerusalem again. "Jesus entered the temple and drove out all who sold and bought in the temple, and he overturned the tables of the money changers and the seats of those who sold pigeons. He said to them, 'It is written, "My house shall be called a house of prayer," but you make it a den of robbers.'" (Matthew 21:12-13). We must be spiritually awake and ensure that we do not neglect God's temple. If it seems like we come to church just to meet friends, play games, or eat, let’s remember today's message once again.
