John 4
15 The woman said to him, “Sir, give me this water so that I won’t get thirsty and have to keep coming here to draw water.”
16 He told her, “Go, call your husband and come back.”
17 “I have no husband,” she replied.
Jesus said to her, “You are right when you say you have no husband.
18 The fact is, you have had five husbands, and the man you now have is not your husband. What you have just said is quite true.”
예수님은 오늘 본문에 앞서 "내가 주는 물을 먹는 자는 영원히 목마르지 아니하리니 나의 주는 물은 그 속에서 영생하도록 솟아나는 샘물이 되리라"고 말씀하셨고 사마리아 여인은 그 물을 자기에게 달라고 했습니다. 그런데 예수님은 갑자기 물 이야기를 하시다가 그 여인에게 남편을 데려오라고 하시면서 주제를 바꿉니다. 예수님은 이미 그 여인의 배경을 알고 계셨습니다. 남편이 없다고 말한 여인에게 남편 다섯이 있었고 지금 있는 남자도 남편이 아니라고 그 여인의 민감한 부분을 모두 말씀 하십니다.
Before today’s passage, Jesus said, “Whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” The Samaritan woman asked Jesus to give her this water. However, Jesus suddenly changed the topic by asking her to go and call her husband. Jesus already knew her background. He revealed the sensitive details of her life, saying that she had five husbands and that the man she was currently with was not her husband.
19 “Sir,” the woman said, “I can see that you are a prophet.
20 Our ancestors worshiped on this mountain, but you Jews claim that the place where we must worship is in Jerusalem.”
21 “Woman,” Jesus replied, “believe me, a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem.
22 You Samaritans worship what you do not know; we worship what we do know, for salvation is from the Jews.
23 Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks.
24 God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth.”
자신의 배경을 모두 알고 있는 예수님에 놀라면서 당신은 선지자라고 여인은 말합니다. 그러면서 예배하는 장소에 대해 말합니다. 사마리아인의 조상들은 이 산에서 예배를 드렸으나 유대인들은 예루살렘에서 드려야 한다고 했다고 말입니다. 예수님은 다시 이 여인에게 장소가 중요한 것이 아님을 알려주십니다. 예배는 성령 안에서 드려야 하고 진정한 마음과 하나님의 말씀 안에서 드려야 하는 본질을 일깨워 주십니다.
The woman, astonished that Jesus knew everything about her background, said to Him, "I see that you are a prophet." She then brought up the topic of the place of worship, mentioning that her Samaritan ancestors worshiped on this mountain, while the Jews claimed that worship must take place in Jerusalem. In response, Jesus revealed to her that the location is not what matters. He reminded her of the essence of worship—that true worship must be offered in the Spirit and with a sincere heart, grounded in God's Word.
25 The woman said, “I know that Messiah” (called Christ) “is coming. When he comes, he will explain everything to us.”
26 Then Jesus declared, “I, the one speaking to you—I am he.”
예수님의 말씀을 들은 그 사마리아 여인은 자기가 메시야가 오셔서 모든 것을 우리에게 설명해 주실것임을 안다고 말합니다. 장소에 대해서 말하다가 영적인 본질에 관심을 갖는 것을 볼 수 있습니다. 예수님은 자신이 메시야임을 분명하게 말씀해 주셨습니다. 자신이 남편을 찾고 그를 의지하려 하면서도 갈증이 채워지지 않아 영원히 목마르지 않는 물을 달라고 했던 것에서 예수님과 함께 대화하면서 결국 메시야를 직접 만나는 장면까지로 흐름을 볼 수 있습니다. 예수그리스도는 단순한 지혜를 가르치러 오신 분이 아닌, 우리의 영혼을 구원하시기 위해 오신 메시야이심을 믿고 감사를 드립니다.
The Samaritan woman, after hearing Jesus' words, expressed her knowledge that the Messiah would come and explain everything to them. While the conversation initially focused on the place of worship, we can see her shifting interest toward spiritual truths. Jesus then clearly revealed that He is the Messiah.
From her initial request for the living water that would quench her eternal thirst, through her struggles in seeking fulfillment by relying on others—like her husbands—we witness her journey toward finally meeting the Messiah face-to-face. This progression highlights a profound spiritual awakening.
We give thanks and believe that Jesus Christ is not merely a teacher of wisdom but the Messiah who came to save our souls.
