Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand
1 Some time after this, Jesus crossed to the far shore of the Sea of Galilee (that is, the Sea of Tiberias),
2 and a great crowd of people followed him because they saw the signs he had performed by healing the sick.
3 Then Jesus went up on a mountainside and sat down with his disciples.
4 The Jewish Passover Festival was near.
5 When Jesus looked up and saw a great crowd coming toward him, he said to Philip, “Where shall we buy bread for these people to eat?”
6 He asked this only to test him, for he already had in mind what he was going to do.
7 Philip answered him, “It would take more than half a year’s wages[a] to buy enough bread for each one to have a bite!”
8 Another of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, spoke up,
9 “Here is a boy with five small barley loaves and two small fish, but how far will they go among so many?”
예수님은 많은 무리들이 모인 것을 보시고 이들의 식사문제를 계획하셨음을 알 수 있습니다. 빌립을 시험하시려고 이 사람들에게 먹일 빵을 어디서 살 수 있을지 물었지만 빌립은 이 사람들이 한 입씩만 먹더라도 반년치 연봉 보다도 많은 돈일 들거라도 대답합니다. "한 입", "많은 돈"의 단어만 보아도 하기 매우 힘든 일이라는 부정적인 생각을 알 수 있습니다. 그런데 앤드류는 터무니없이 적은 음식이긴 하지만 현재 자기가 파악한 상황인 보리떡 다섯개와 물고기 두마리가 있음을 예수님께 알려드립니다. 여기까지는 그래도 자기가 할 수 있는 최선을 다한 것을 알 수 있습니다. 그러나 마지막 코멘트 "그러나 그것이 이 많은 사람에게 얼마나 되겠삽나이까"가 여전히 아쉽습니다.
Observing the large gathering, Jesus anticipated the need to provide them with food. To test Philip, He asked where they could buy bread for the people. Philip responded that even if everyone took just a bite, it would cost more than half a year's wages, indicating the daunting nature of the task. In contrast, Andrew informed Jesus about a boy with five barley loaves and two fish—a meager amount. While Andrew did his best by presenting the available resources, his comment, "But how far will they go among so many?" reveals lingering doubt.
10 Jesus said, “Have the people sit down.” There was plenty of grass in that place, and they sat down (about five thousand men were there).
11 Jesus then took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed to those who were seated as much as they wanted. He did the same with the fish.
예수님은 먼 거리를 여행한 사람들을 먼저 편하게 앉히셨습니다. 위에서 이 사람들의 배고픔을 헤아리셨을 뿐 아니라 식사를 하기 위해서 편하게 앉도록 배려하시는 분임을 알 수 있습니다. 그리고 빵과 물고기를 나누기 전에 감사기도를 하시는 모습을 볼 수 있습니다. 기적을 베푸시는 예수님도 식사기도를 하시는데, 끼니 때 마다 일용할 양식을 주시는 하나님 아버지에게 기도하는 우리가 되어야 겠습니다. 예수님이 사람들에게 그들이 먹고싶은만큼 나누신 것을 보며 사람의 머리로는 보이는 음식을 머릿수로 나눌 생각이 앞설테지만 그리스도의 방법은 그러한 제한이 없는 것을 알 수 있습니다.
Jesus had the people who had traveled a long distance sit down comfortably. This shows that He not only considered their hunger but also cared for their comfort during the meal. Before distributing the bread and fish, He offered a prayer of thanks. If Jesus, who performed miracles, prayed before meals, we too should pray to God the Father, who provides our daily bread, at each mealtime. In the miracle of feeding the 5,000, Jesus demonstrated that His methods transcend human limitations. While we might instinctively consider dividing available food among the number of people, Jesus provided abundantly without such constraints. This act highlights the boundless nature of Christ's provision and challenges our conventional thinking.
12 When they had all had enough to eat, he said to his disciples, “Gather the pieces that are left over. Let nothing be wasted.”
13 So they gathered them and filled twelve baskets with the pieces of the five barley loaves left over by those who had eaten.
사람들은 먹고싶은 만큼 충분하게 먹었습니다. 그리스도께서는 남은 음식을 버리지 말고 모으라고 했고, 모두 모아보니 12 바구니에 남았습니다. 이처럼 하나님의 은혜는 충분하게 나누고도 남는 방식임을 알 수 있습니다.
After everyone had eaten their fill, Jesus instructed His disciples to gather the leftover pieces so that nothing would be wasted. When they collected the fragments, they filled twelve baskets. This act signifies that God's grace is abundant and overflowing, providing more than enough even after sharing generously.
14 After the people saw the sign Jesus performed, they began to say, “Surely this is the Prophet who is to come into the world.”
15 Jesus, knowing that they intended to come and make him king by force, withdrew again to a mountain by himself.
기적을 베푸시는 예수님에 대하여 이 세상에 오신 선지자라고 칭송하는 사람들입니다. 예수님은 그들이 예수님을 왕으로 만드려 하는 것을 아시고 혼자서 산으로 올라가십니다. 사람들에게 인기가 많아지면 거만해지는 것이 사람의 특성입니다. 그러나 예수님은 그럴때일 수록 조심하시고 오히려 혼자서 산에 가십니다. 아마도 기도하시기 위한 것이라고 생각됩니다. 예수님을 본받아서 사람에게 잘보이고 인기를 누리려 하기 보다는 그럴 수록 기도해야겠습니다.
After performing the miracle of feeding the 5,000, Jesus withdrew to a mountain alone. This action reflects His humility and desire to avoid the temptation of seeking popularity or acclaim. Recognizing that human nature often leads to pride when receiving praise, Jesus chose solitude to maintain His focus on God's will. In times of success or recognition, we should emulate Jesus' example by seeking solitude and prayer, rather than striving for human approval.

Jesus Walks on the Water
16 When evening came, his disciples went down to the lake,
17 where they got into a boat and set off across the lake for Capernaum. By now it was dark, and Jesus had not yet joined them.
18 A strong wind was blowing and the waters grew rough.
19 When they had rowed about three or four miles,[b] they saw Jesus approaching the boat, walking on the water; and they were frightened.
20 But he said to them, “It is I; don’t be afraid.”
21 Then they were willing to take him into the boat, and immediately the boat reached the shore where they were heading.
