John 11:1-16 

The Death of Lazarus

1 Now a man named Lazarus was sick. He was from Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha.

2 (This Mary, whose brother Lazarus now lay sick, was the same one who poured perfume on the Lord and wiped his feet with her hair.)

3 So the sisters sent word to Jesus, “Lord, the one you love is sick.”

4 When he heard this, Jesus said, “This sickness will not end in death. No, it is for God’s glory so that God’s Son may be glorified through it.”

5 Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus.

6 So when he heard that Lazarus was sick, he stayed where he was two more days,

7 and then he said to his disciples, “Let us go back to Judea.”

예수님이 사랑하는 마리아 마르다 나사로 가정의 나사로가 매우 아프다는 소식이 예수님께 전해졌습니다. 예수님은 분명 나사로가 얼마나 위독한지 알고 계셨을 것입니다. 그러나 오히려 말씀하시기를 이 병은 죽을 병이 아니라 하나님의 영광을 위한 것이며 이것을 통해서 하나님의 아들이 영광을 받게 하려는 것이다는 말씀을 하십니다. 주변 사람들은 이해하기 힘들었을 것입니다. 나사로가 위독하다는데 갑자기 이 병이 하나님의 영광이 나오고, 하나님의 아들이 영광을 받는다는 것은 무슨 말이었을까요? 예수님을 속히 베다니로 가지 않으시고 이틀을 더 머무르셨습니다. 가까운 사람이 위독하다는 소식을 들었을 때 우리는 급하게 병문안을 갑니다. 그러나 예수님은 그렇게 하지 않으셨습니다.

Jesus received news that Lazarus, from the family he loved—Mary, Martha, and Lazarus—was very ill. He was undoubtedly aware of the severity of Lazarus's condition. However, He stated, "This sickness will not end in death. No, it is for God's glory so that God's Son may be glorified through it." This statement might have been difficult for those around Him to understand. How could Lazarus's critical illness be related to God's glory and the glorification of God's Son? Instead of hastening to Bethany, Jesus stayed where He was for two more days. When we hear that someone close to us is critically ill, we usually rush to visit them. However, Jesus did not do so.

8 “But Rabbi,” they said, “a short while ago the Jews there tried to stone you, and yet you are going back?”

9 Jesus answered, “Are there not twelve hours of daylight? Anyone who walks in the daytime will not stumble, for they see by this world’s light.

10 It is when a person walks at night that they stumble, for they have no light.”

제자들은 유대지방에서 사람들이 예수님을 돌로 치려했던 곳이라 위험하다는 의미로 거기를 그래도 다시 가시는지 물었습니다. 예수님은 누구든지 낮에 다니는 사람은 이 세상 빛을 보기 때문에 걸려 넘어지지 않지만 밤에 다니면 그 사람에게 빛이 없으므로 걸려 넘어진다는 말씀을 하십니다. 예수님 자신이 빛이시므로 그리스도와 함께 동행하면 두려울 것이 없음을 가르쳐 주십니다. 우리의 머리로 생각할 때 두려운 일도 우리가 그리스도 안에서 하나님의 뜻을 신뢰하며 따라야 합니다.

The disciples expressed concern about returning to Judea, noting that people there had recently attempted to stone Jesus. In response, Jesus said that those who walk during the day do not stumble because they see the light of this world, but those who walk at night stumble because the light is not in them. This teaches that Jesus Himself is the light, and walking with Christ removes fear. Even when situations seem daunting, we should trust and follow God's will in Christ.

11 After he had said this, he went on to tell them, “Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep; but I am going there to wake him up.”

12 His disciples replied, “Lord, if he sleeps, he will get better.”

13 Jesus had been speaking of his death, but his disciples thought he meant natural sleep.

14 So then he told them plainly, “Lazarus is dead,

15 and for your sake I am glad I was not there, so that you may believe. But let us go to him.”

16 Then Thomas (also known as Didymus) said to the rest of the disciples, “Let us also go, that we may die with him.”

예수님은 나사로가 잠이 들었다고 하시며 예수님이 그를 깨우러 간다고 하셨습니다. 그러나 제자들은 그 말 뜻을 이해하지 못하고 죽음이 아닌 실제 자는 잠으로 받아들입니다. 그래서 예수님이 다시 정확히 나사로는 죽었다고 말해주십니다. 내가 거기에 있지 않았던게 다행이고 이는 너희의 믿음을 위해서라고 하십니다. 예수그리스도의 죽음과 부활에 대해 예수님은 나사로의 사건을 통해 제자들에게 미리 보여주시는 부분입니다. 죽음을 이기시는 예수님은 죽음으로부터 부활하시는 분이시고, 그러한 권세를 가지고 계심을 제자들에게 나타내십니다. 나사로가 위독한 상태에서 예수님이 가신 후 나았다면 사람들은 '나을 때가 되니 나았다'고 생각할 수도 있습니다. 아예 회복의 소망이 없는 죽음의 상태에서 예수님은 나사로를 찾아가실 계획이었던 것입니다.

In John 11:11–15, Jesus refers to Lazarus's death as "sleep," indicating His intention to awaken him. The disciples misunderstand, thinking Jesus speaks of natural sleep, prompting Him to clarify that Lazarus is dead. Jesus expresses gladness that He was not present during Lazarus's death, stating this will strengthen their faith. This event prefigures Jesus's own death and resurrection, demonstrating His authority over death and foreshadowing the resurrection life He offers to believers. By raising Lazarus after four days, Jesus provides undeniable evidence of His power, leading many to believe in Him.

이때 도마는 돌에 맞아 죽을 뻔한 유대지방으로 가는 예수님을 따라 우리도 예수님과 함께 죽으러 가겠다는 말을 합니다. 도마는 예수님의 부활 후에 창에 찔려 난 상처를 만져보고 예수님인지를 알았던 의심이 많은 제자였습니다. 그러나 이 때는 분명 예수님과 함께 죽을 각오까지도 되어있는 제자였습니다. 이렇게 예수님과 직접 함께 다녔던 제자도 이렇게 믿음이 있다가 또 의심도 했다가 하는 인간의 연약함을 볼 수 있습니다. 그래서 우리는 계속 말씀을 붙들고 살아야 합니다. 말씀 속에 길이 있습니다.

Thomas, also known as Didymus, says, "Let us also go, that we may die with him." This statement reflects Thomas's willingness to face danger alongside Jesus, even if it means death. However Thomas expresses doubt about Jesus's resurrection, stating that he would not believe unless he could see and touch Jesus's wounds. This contrast highlights the human tendency to fluctuate between faith and doubt. Despite these moments of doubt, Jesus's teachings and presence guide us toward unwavering faith. In our journey of faith, it is essential to hold onto the Word of God, for within it lies the path to eternal life.
