John 19:23-30
New International Version
23 When the soldiers crucified Jesus, they took his clothes, dividing them into four shares, one for each of them, with the undergarment remaining. This garment was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom.
24 “Let’s not tear it,” they said to one another. “Let’s decide by lot who will get it.”
This happened that the scripture might be fulfilled that said,
“They divided my clothes among them
and cast lots for my garment.”
So this is what the soldiers did.
The Roman soldiers divided Jesus' outer garment into four parts, one for each of them. However, His seamless inner garment was not torn; instead, they cast lots to determine who would receive it. This action fulfilled the prophecy spoken by David in Psalm 22:18: "They divide my clothes among them and cast lots for my garment." At that time, David was fleeing from King Saul and later from his son Absalom's rebellion. While these expressions reflect David's actual sufferings, they also foreshadow the crucifixion sufferings of Jesus Christ.
25 Near the cross of Jesus stood his mother, his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene.
26 When Jesus saw his mother there, and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to her, “Woman,[b] here is your son,”
27 and to the disciple, “Here is your mother.” From that time on, this disciple took her into his home.
Near the cross stood Jesus' mother, Mary, and the beloved disciple, Apostle John. Jesus, seeing His mother and the disciple whom He loved standing nearby, said to His mother, "Woman, behold, your son." Then He said to the disciple, "Behold, your mother." From that time on, this disciple took her into his home. This demonstrates that even amid extreme suffering, Jesus fulfilled His familial responsibilities. It signifies the formation of a new spiritual family community at the foot of the cross. Through Jesus' sacrifice and love, we are called to care for and love one another as members of God's family.
The Death of Jesus
28 Later, knowing that everything had now been finished, and so that Scripture would be fulfilled, Jesus said, “I am thirsty.”
29 A jar of wine vinegar was there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put the sponge on a stalk of the hyssop plant, and lifted it to Jesus’ lips.
30 When he had received the drink, Jesus said, “It is finished.” With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.
When Jesus was on the cross and said, "I am thirsty," people offered Him a sponge soaked in sour wine, held up by a hyssop branch. This act fulfilled the prophecy in Psalm 69:21, which says, "They gave me poison for food, and for my thirst they gave me sour wine to drink." This Old Testament verse reflects David's sufferings, which prefigure Jesus's crucifixion. The soldiers' act of offering Jesus sour wine on a hyssop-soaked sponge was a customary practice of the time, intended to alleviate the pain of those being executed.
Jesus Christ died after saying, "It is finished." As written in the Scriptures, He accomplished everything to give us eternal life. Therefore, we must repent from our sins and return to Jesus.
